A crisis in accurate health advice

For almost as long as abortion has been legal, so-called “crisis pregnancy centers” have been part of the effort to make that legal procedure difficult, if not impossible, to access.

Staffed by anti-abortion activists, crisis pregnancy centers typically advertise free testing and counseling to women who are confused, young or unmarried, and then try to persuade them to keep their babies.

Some centers make it clear that their services come from a pro-life perspective. Others, however, are far less transparent, branding themselves to look like abortion providers and then lying about the risks of abortion or tricking women into remaining pregnant past the point where termination is an option…

California anti-abortion pregnancy centers fight to block reproductive rights information law

Days after California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law requiring anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers to let their clients know they are not licensed medical facilities, and force the centers to provide information about abortion and contraception, four centers filed lawsuits in an attempt to block the law.

The bill, called the Reproductive FACT Act (Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care, and Transparency), was co-sponsored by NARAL Pro-Choice America and California Attorney General Kamala Harris. As law it affects the nearly 170 recorded crisis pregnancy centers in California…

A new California law targets crisis pregnancy centers- but will it work?

California’s crisis pregnancy centers are founts of misinformation for women seeking abortions. A recent undercover report from NARAL Pro-Choice California found that they routinely lie about the physical and mental risks of abortion, use stalling tactics and falsehoods about “natural termination” to run out the legal abortion window, and disregard reports of abuse and health problems.

As of Jan. 1, these anti-choice CPCs, which often employ cunning branding and advertisements that make them seem like abortion clinics, will have a few more obstacles to skirt. Last Friday, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law the Reproductive FACT (Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care, and Transparency) Act, which will require any center that’s not an actual licensed medical facility to disclose that fact to clients. It also mandates that any licensed reproductive health provider inform its patients of California’s programs for affordable birth control, abortion, and prenatal care…

California becomes the first state to crack down on misleading "crisis pregnancy centers"

From the heavily-edited videos that made Planned Parenthood staff look like insensitive fetal tissue profiteers to presidential candidate Carly Fiorina’s erroneous ad campaign, the past months have unveiled the general misinformation and coercion behind many anti-abortion groups. Now, one state has taken the leap to combat these types of harmful anti-abortion propaganda at the source: inside anti-abortion organizations disguised as health clinics. But not without a fight…

These are the real liars: forget Planned Parenthood--it's the anti-choice movement that's rife with corruption

For months now, Planned Parenthood has been under a barrage of outlandish accusations from conservatives: That they “sell” fetal body parts as some kind of secret money-making scheme and that, so hungry are they for more fetuses to sell that they actually lure women into having abortions they don’t want. Several investigations into these accusations, both on the state and federal level, have turned up nothing. Same story with multiple show trials disguised as congressional hearings, which led to anti-choice fanatic Rep. Jason Chaffetz admitting that they found no evidence of wrongdoing. At this point, Republicans have basically given up the last bit of hope they’re going to find a single shred of evidence for their lurid accusations of corruption, as the latest pseudo-hearing was nothing more than a bunch of anti-choicers griping about how they can’t believe abortion is still legal…

One state finallycracked down on deceptive anti-abortion pregnancy centers

California on Friday became the only state to target anti-abortion pregnancy centers with a law cracking down on deceptive practices some have used to prevent or dissuade women from having an abortion.

The new law, which forces some crisis pregnancy centers to offer information about public assistance for reproductive services and others to notify patients that there are no medical professionals on staff, passed the California state assembly with a large majority in late May. Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, signed the bill on Friday night…

California requires crisis pregnancy centers to tell the truth

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed a bill Friday that would require crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) to offer pregnant people information about state programs providing reproductive health-care services, including abortion.

CPC groups reacted to the new law, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, by filing a lawsuit Saturday to block the measure, reported the Sacramento Bee…
